Renault RN0700, RN0710 and RN0720: engine oil for Renault and Dacia
RN0700, RN0710, RN0720 or RN17: Renault sets its own engine oil standards, which as a rule also apply to Dacia. Read on to find out what each standard stands for, what matters with a diesel particulate filter and which Elat oils carry the RN standards on their labels.
How Renault’s oil standards are organised
Renault defines its engine oil requirements in its own standards, all beginning with RN. They appear in Renault owner’s manuals and service documents and, as a rule, in those of Dacia, a brand of the Renault Group. RN0700 and RN0710, together with the particulate filter standard 0720, differ mainly by fuel type and exhaust after-treatment; Renault RN17 is a newer addition.
The numbers do not simply build on one another. An RN0700 oil is not automatically suitable for vehicles whose owner’s manual calls for 0720 – and a low-ash oil is not automatically an oil to a Renault standard. Labels print the standards with or without a space, for example “RN 0700” or “RN0700”; both refer to the same standard.
In brief
Put simply: RN0700 for petrol engines, RN0710 for diesels without a particulate filter, 0720 for diesels with a particulate filter; RN17 is a newer standard. In the Elat range, only 5W30 C4 Ren Tec lists RN 0720 – according to its label “with DPF; except 2.2 DCI”. The owner’s manual gives the binding assignment for your engine.

RN0720: engine oil for Renault and Dacia diesels with a DPF
Where a diesel engine has a particulate filter, Renault generally specifies standard 0720. It builds on ACEA C4, a class describing particularly low-ash oils: less sulphated ash means fewer residues in the filter. In the Elat range, 5W30 C4 Ren Tec lists this standard – an RN0720 5W-30 of ACEA classes C3/C4 and, according to its product description, a low-SAPS, low-friction oil based on HC synthesis.
Its label does, however, restrict the entry. It reads, word for word, “Renault RN 0720 (with DPF; except 2.2 DCI)”: according to the label, the specification applies to engines with a diesel particulate filter, while 2.2 DCI engines are expressly excluded. The oil also lists MB 226.51, MB 229.51 and MB 229.31 as specifications.
Take care with 2.2 DCI
If your vehicle has a 2.2 DCI engine, the label states that 5W30 C4 Ren Tec is not intended for RN 0720. Tell us the engine and the requirement in the owner’s manual – we will work out with you what is needed.
RN0700, RN0710 and RN17: the other Renault standards in the Elat range
RN0700 appears on eight oils in the Elat range, from 5W-30 to 10W-40. Four of them also list RN0710: 5W30 Premium LongLife 3, 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3, 5W40 High Tec Quantum and 5W40 K2 Hightec HC Synthetic. Simplified, RN0700 is the requirement for petrol engines in many models and RN0710 for diesels without a particulate filter; the owner’s manual provides the binding assignment.
The newer RN17 standard is listed only by 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3, printed as “RN 17”. If your owner’s manual names RN17, the oil should carry exactly that standard; the older numbers are not a like-for-like replacement.
The ACEA class also separates the oils: the two 10W-40 oils, the K2 5W-40 and 5W30 K1 Ford belong to the A and B classes, while 5W30 Cipe C2 and Premium LongLife 3 belong to the low-ash C classes. When a diesel has a particulate filter, though, the Renault standard named by the manufacturer counts for more than the ACEA class alone.
| RN standard | Simplified assignment | Elat oils listing this specification | Viscosity |
|---|---|---|---|
| RN 0720 – on the label “with DPF; except 2.2 DCI” | Diesel engines with a particulate filter | 5W30 C4 Ren Tec | 5W-30 |
| RN0710 | Diesel engines without a particulate filter | 5W30 Premium LongLife 3, 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3, 5W40 High Tec Quantum, 5W40 K2 Hightec HC Synthetic | 5W-30, 5W-40 |
| RN0700 | Petrol engines | the four RN0710 oils plus 5W30 Cipe C2, 5W30 K1 Ford, 10W40 MM8 Semi Synthetic and 10W40 High Tec Quantum | 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40 |
| RN17 | Newer standard, as per owner’s manual | 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3 | 5W-30 |

Approval or specification?
Only expressly stated manufacturer approvals are marked “Approval”. All other entries are specifications and recommendations as printed on the product label; the entries relevant to this topic are highlighted. For your vehicle or machine, the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s approval lists always take precedence. If in doubt, we are happy to advise you.
Dacia engine oil to RN standards
Dacia belongs to the Renault Group, and many Dacia models use Renault engines. Dacia owner’s manuals therefore generally list the same RN standards. The same rules apply when choosing oil: stick to the RN standard from the owner’s manual, check for a particulate filter on diesel engines and keep to the specified viscosity.
Workshops with many Renault and Dacia customers can often cover most jobs with a small selection: an oil listing RN0700 and RN0710 for petrol engines and diesels without a particulate filter, 5W30 C4 Ren Tec for diesels with a DPF within the limits of its label entry and – where required – an oil with RN17.
Oil changes in the workshop: record the standard, dispose of waste oil
For Renault and Dacia vehicles, it pays to record the oil standard on the job sheet. Two points deserve particular attention:
- Note standard and viscosity: this ensures the same oil is used at the next change, for example “RN0710, 5W-40”.
- Check the engine variant: on diesel engines, the particulate filter determines the standard – and for the Elat oil with RN 0720, the engine variant matters too.
Every oil change produces waste oil. We organise its collection throughout Germany via certified disposal partners, including a disposal certificate; see waste oil collection for details. Frequently asked questions
How should I read “except 2.2 DCI” next to RN0720?
It is how the label of 5W30 C4 Ren Tec restricts its specification: it lists RN 0720 for engines with a DPF but expressly excludes 2.2 DCI engines. For those engines, the oil is therefore not intended for RN 0720 according to its label. We are happy to clarify the requirement with you using your owner’s manual.
Will an RN0700 oil do in a diesel that has a particulate filter?
Usually not: for Renault and Dacia diesels with a particulate filter, the owner’s manual generally names RN 0720, a standard for particularly low-ash oils. RN0700, by contrast, is the requirement for petrol engines in many models. The entry for your engine remains decisive.
Is every ACEA C4 oil suitable for Renault diesels with a DPF?
Not automatically. ACEA C4 is the basis, and the Renault standard adds requirements of its own. Look for RN 0720 on the label – in the Elat range on 5W30 C4 Ren Tec, with the restriction printed there.
What is RN17?
RN17 is a newer Renault engine oil standard. In the Elat range, 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3 lists it, printed as “RN 17”, alongside RN 0700 and RN 0710. Check the owner’s manual to see whether your engine requires RN17.
Which Elat oils list both RN0700 and RN0710?
Four oils: 5W30 Premium LongLife 3 and 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3 as 5W-30, and 5W40 High Tec Quantum and 5W40 K2 Hightec HC Synthetic as 5W-40. Of the Renault standards, the two 10W-40 oils, Cipe C2 and K1 list only RN0700. The owner’s manual specifies which viscosity fits.
