WSS-M2C913-D, WSS-M2C948-B and M2C950-A: engine oil to Ford standards
Ford expresses its engine oil standards as codes such as WSS-M2C913-D, WSS-M2C948-B or M2C950-A. This page shows how the codes are built, which viscosity goes with them and where they appear on Elat engine oil labels.
Reading a Ford oil specification: how WSS-M2C codes are built
Ford sets out its lubricant requirements in its own factory standards. For engine oil, they usually take the form WSS-M2C followed by a three-digit number and a suffix, for example WSS-M2C913-D. The number identifies the standard, while the suffix – a letter or, on newer codes, a combination such as B1 or A1 – distinguishes its versions. When choosing an oil, number and suffix therefore belong together.
Not every M2C number relates to engine oil: transmission fluids also carry Ford codes in this format, in the Elat range for example fluids for dual-clutch and CVT gearboxes (DSG and CVT transmission fluid). So check that the number in your owner’s manual is the one listed for engine oil.

In brief
Ford typically names standard 913 with 5W-30, 948-B with 5W-20 and M2C950-A with 0W-30. In the Elat range, 5W30 K1 Ford, 5W20 Ford Eco and 0W30 Profi Tec for Euro 6 list these codes as specifications. What counts is always the standard in the owner’s manual, not the viscosity alone.

WSS-M2C913-D and the earlier versions A to C: Ford’s 5W-30 standard
Ford typically names standard 913 together with the viscosity 5W-30. In the Elat range, the Ford 913-D 5W-30 is 5W30 K1 Ford: its label reads “Ford WSS-M2C913-A/B/C/D”, covering all four versions of the standard. According to its product description, it is a low-friction engine oil based on HC synthesis.
The label also lists ACEA A1/B1/A5/B5, API SL/CF, Fiat 9.55535-N1, Renault RN0700 and Iveco 18-1811 Class S1/S2. ACEA classes A1/B1 and A5/B5 stand for low-friction oils with a reduced high-temperature viscosity; they do not describe a low-ash, low-SAPS formulation. Which version of standard 913 – or which other standard – your Ford requires is set out in the owner’s manual.
WSS-M2C948-B 5W-20: engine oil for Ford EcoBoost
According to its product description, 5W20 Ford Eco was developed for Ford EcoBoost engines, and its label lists “Ford WSS-M2C948-A/B”. It also names ACEA C5, API SN, API CF, ILSAC GF-5 and the Jaguar/Land Rover standard STJLR.03.5004. ACEA C5 describes oils with a limited ash content and a particularly low high-temperature viscosity.
A Ford EcoBoost engine oil must above all carry the standard given in the owner’s manual. Not every EcoBoost engine calls for the same standard or the same viscosity, so check the documents first before reaching for the 5W-20.
Workshop tip
Shelve Ford oils by standard, not by viscosity: 913-D and 948-B are only one viscosity step apart but describe different oils. If you are unsure, we are glad to check the requirement with you.

Approval or specification?
Only expressly stated manufacturer approvals are marked “Approval”. All other entries are specifications and recommendations as printed on the product label; the entries relevant to this topic are highlighted. For your vehicle or machine, the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s approval lists always take precedence. If in doubt, we are happy to advise you.
Ford M2C950-A 0W-30, WSS-M2C917-A and the 0W-20 codes
0W30 Profi Tec for Euro 6 prints the standard as “Ford M2C950-A” – without the WSS prefix used for the other codes; we reproduce it exactly as it appears on the label. As an M2C950-A 0W-30 of ACEA class C2, it also lists PSA B71 2312, BMW Longlife 12FE, MB 229.61 and Jaguar JLR.03.5007, among others. According to its product description, it is designed for petrol and diesel engines with exhaust after-treatment (DPF).
WSS-M2C917-A appears on two oils that list many other manufacturer standards as well: 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3 as a 5W-30 and 5W40 High Tec Quantum as a 5W-40. The requirement for your engine determines which viscosity fits.
0W20 VW Tec Blue Oil lists no fewer than four Ford codes: WSS-M2C947-A, WSS-M2C947-B1, WSS-M2C962-A1 and WSS-M2C952-A1. Its product description states that it is not backward compatible, so this 0W-20 is only an option if your Ford expressly calls for one of these standards.
Ford standard oil for workshops and fleets
Several Elat labels list Jaguar and Land Rover standards alongside the Ford codes: STJLR.03.5003 on the 5W-30, STJLR.03.5004 on the 5W-20, JLR.03.5007 on the 0W-30, and ST JLR 51.5122 and ST JLR 03.5006 on the 0W-20. Three rules help in everyday workshop and fleet use:
- Compare the full code: a different number means a different standard, even if the viscosity sounds similar.
- Mind the suffix: if the owner’s manual names a specific version, the oil should list it – the K1 covers every version of 913 from A to D.
- Do not switch viscosity on your own: a 5W-20 to 948-B and a 5W-30 to 913-D are not simply interchangeable.
We supply Ford standard oils to workshops and fleets from 1-litre bottles to 1000-litre IBCs and tanker deliveries, for business customers throughout Germany. Find out how we work together in our information for business customers; for nationwide supply, see the overview Supply across Germany.
Frequently asked questions
What is the letter at the end of WSS-M2C913-D for?
It identifies the version of standard 913; besides D, there are the earlier versions A, B and C. 5W30 K1 Ford lists all four. Check your owner’s manual for the version your Ford requires.
Which engine oil does a Ford EcoBoost need?
That depends on the engine – look up the standard in the owner’s manual. For engines that call for WSS-M2C948-B, 5W20 Ford Eco in the Elat range lists the specification “Ford WSS-M2C948-A/B”. According to its product description, it was developed for Ford EcoBoost engines.
Is a 5W-30 acceptable instead of a 5W-20?
Only if the owner’s manual permits it for your engine. Standards 948-B and 913-D describe different oils, and a standard defines more than the viscosity. Should you be unsure, we can go through the requirement together.
Why does the 0W-30 say “Ford M2C950-A” without WSS?
That is how the standard is printed on the label of 0W30 Profi Tec for Euro 6, and we reproduce it unchanged. What matters is comparing the number and suffix – 950-A – with the entry in your owner’s manual. Get in touch if you have any questions.
Do the Jaguar and Land Rover standards on the labels apply to Fords?
No – every vehicle follows the standard set by its own manufacturer. Several Elat oils are simply specified to Jaguar Land Rover standards as well, such as STJLR.03.5003 on 5W30 K1 Ford or STJLR.03.5004 on 5W20 Ford Eco. Both brands belonged to the Ford group until 2008.
