VW 504 00, 507 00, 502 00 and 505 00: engine oil to VW standards
Which VW standard does your owner’s manual call for – and which oil meets it? This page explains the key VW oil standards in plain terms and shows Elat engine oils that list VW 504 00/507 00 or VW 502 00/505 00 as a specification.
What do the VW oil standards mean?
Volkswagen defines its own factory standards for the engine oil used in its brands. Numbers such as VW 502 00, VW 504 00, VW 505 00 and VW 507 00 each stand for a precisely defined set of requirements: viscosity, wear protection, engine cleanliness, compatibility with exhaust after-treatment and suitability for long drain intervals. An oil with the right VW specification is therefore more than “any 5W-30” – what matters is the standard, not the viscosity alone.
The VW standard your vehicle needs depends on the engine design, the fuel and the type of service. Petrol and diesel engines have different standards, and flexible LongLife service places higher demands on the oil than a fixed interval. The applicable standard is listed in the owner’s manual or the service schedule. The standards apply across the group, so anyone looking for engine oil for Audi, Seat and Skoda follows the same VW standards.
In brief
Many VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda models with LongLife service need a 5W-30 to VW 504 00/507 00: VW 504 00 covers petrol engines, VW 507 00 diesel engines. Vehicles with fixed service intervals often use VW 502 00 or 505 00. VW 508 00/509 00 (0W-20) is a separate case and not simply interchangeable.

VW 504 00 and VW 507 00: LongLife oil for petrol and diesel engines
VW 504 00 for petrol engines and VW 507 00 for diesel engines form the LongLife III generation of VW oil standards. Oils meeting these standards are designed for flexible LongLife service and are also suitable for vehicles with fixed service intervals. The typical viscosity is 5W-30, in some cases 0W-30.
Both standards rely on a low-ash, low-SAPS formulation that protects diesel particulate filters and catalytic converters. Every Elat oil with VW 504 00/507 00 therefore also lists ACEA C3. In practice, 504 00 and 507 00 usually appear together on the same container, so a workshop can serve petrol and diesel vehicles from the VW group with a single oil.
According to the product descriptions, 5W30 LongLife 3, 5W30 Classic LongLife 3, 5W30 Premium LongLife 3 and 5W30 Extra LongLife 3 are designed for oil change intervals of up to 30,000 km. The interval that applies to your vehicle is set by the manufacturer’s service schedule. For a 0W-30 with VW 504 00/507 00, the 0W30 Zero Tec VW is also available.
VW 502 00, 505 00 and 505 01: standards for fixed service intervals
Older vehicles, or vehicles without LongLife service, are usually maintained at fixed intervals. The relevant standards are VW 502 00 for petrol engines, VW 505 00 for diesel engines and VW 505 01 for pump-nozzle (unit injector) diesel engines. Typical viscosities are 5W-40 and 5W-30, and for older diesels to VW 505 00 also 10W-40.
In the Elat range, 5W40 High Tec Quantum and 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3 list the specifications VW 502 00, 505 00 and 505 01. 5W40 K2 Hightec HC Synthetic lists VW 501 01, 502 00 and 505 00, while the 10W-40 oils 10W40 MM8 Semi Synthetic and 10W40 High Tec Quantum are specified to VW 505 00.

Approval or specification?
Only expressly stated manufacturer approvals are marked “Approval”. All other entries are specifications and recommendations as printed on the product label; the entries relevant to this topic are highlighted. For your vehicle or machine, the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s approval lists always take precedence. If in doubt, we are happy to advise you.
How to find the right VW standard for your vehicle
Choosing the right oil takes only a few steps. The key is to follow the manufacturer’s requirement exactly – an oil with a similar-sounding standard is not an equivalent substitute.
- Check the owner’s manual or service schedule: it names the required VW standard, often together with the viscosity.
- Clarify the service type: flexible LongLife service usually calls for VW 504 00 or 507 00, while fixed intervals often also allow 502 00 or 505 00.
- Consider the fuel: VW 502 00 and 504 00 apply to petrol engines, VW 505 00, 505 01 and 507 00 to diesel engines.
- Treat 0W-20 engines separately: if VW 508 00 or 509 00 is specified, only an oil with exactly that standard is suitable, for example 0W20 VW Tec Blue Oil.
- Remember Porsche: Porsche uses its own standards such as Porsche C30. Several Elat LongLife oils also list Porsche C30 as a specification.
Tip for workshops
A 5W-30 with VW 504 00/507 00 covers a large share of the VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda fleet. Add a 0W-20 to VW 508 00/509 00 and a 5W-40 for older vehicles on fixed intervals, and your shelf is well prepared for the VW group. We are happy to put together a suitable range for you.

Frequently asked questions
Is VW 507 00 the same as VW 504 00?
No. VW 504 00 applies to petrol engines and VW 507 00 to diesel engines, including those with a particulate filter. Many oils meet both standards at once: every Elat oil on this page that lists VW 504 00 also lists VW 507 00 as a specification.
Can I use a VW 504 00/507 00 oil instead of VW 502 00 or 505 00?
In many cases yes, because VW introduced the LongLife standards 504 00 and 507 00 as successors to the older standards. There are, however, engine-specific exceptions. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual is decisive – if in doubt, we are happy to check it with you.
Can I replace a 0W-20 to VW 508 00/509 00 with a 5W-30?
No. VW 508 00 and 509 00 are intended for certain newer engines and are not simply interchangeable with 504 00/507 00. According to its product description, 0W20 VW Tec Blue Oil is not backward compatible. Always use exactly the standard your vehicle manufacturer specifies.
Does every oil with “LongLife” in its name meet VW 504 00/507 00?
No, the product name alone does not tell you. 5W30 Mega Tec LongLife 3, for example, lists VW 502 00, 505 00 and 505 01, but not VW 504 00/507 00. What counts is always the specification list on the product page.
Do Elat oils have VW approval?
For the oils shown here, the VW standards are stated on the product label as specifications or recommendations. We mark expressly stated manufacturer approvals separately as “Approval” – on this page that applies to MB 229.52 for 5W30 Premium LongLife 3. Whether a specification is sufficient for your vehicle is stated in the owner’s manual; we are happy to check it with you.
